15 things to know about who makes up America's uninsured

Despite about 20 million Americans gaining health insurance following the Affordable Care Act's enactment, about 24 million adults, or 13 percent, lack insurance, The New York Times reported.

Here are 15 things to know about American's uninsured population.

Race

1. Forty-one percent are white, down from 50 percent in 2013.

2. Hispanics account for 40 percent of the uninsured, up from 29 percent in 2013.

3. Twelve percent of the uninsured are black, down from 13 percent.

4. Asians and other races account for 6 percent of the uninsured, the same as in 2013.

Age

5. Nearly half of the uninsured are age 19 to 34.

6. The overall percentage of young people without health insurance is 18 percent, down from 28 in 2013.

Sex

7. Fifty-eight percent of the uninsured are men, up from 2013.

Socio-economic status

8. Thirty-nine percent of uninsured Americans have incomes below the federal poverty line, or $24,250 for a family of four.

9. Six percent of the uninsured have incomes more than 400 percent of the federal poverty line, or $97,000 for a family of four.

Location

10. Half of the uninsured lived in states without Medicaid expansion. Nineteen states have not expanded Medicaid.

11. Nearly half of the uninsured reside in the South, including large states like Florida and Texas.

12. Eight percent of Midwest residents are uninsured, down from 17 percent in 2013.

Employment

13. Forty-three percent of America's uninsured are unemployed.

14. Fifty-seven percent of the uninsured work at small businesses, or those with less than 25 employees. This number is up from 48 percent in 2013.

15. Thirty percent of the uninsured work full time while 19 percent work part time.
