462,125 sign up for PPACA coverage in first week

The numbers are in: 462,125 people selected a healthcare plan from Healthcare.gov from November 15 to 21, and 48 percent of those individuals were first-time customers, according to a Reuters report.

The first-time Healthcare.gov customers include people from Oregon and Nevada, who shopped on the federally run exchange site for the first time after their states closed down their respective exchanges. The federal site now serves 36 states.

The 462,125 figure does not include consumers in the 14 states with their own exchanges, such as New York and California.

Fifty-two percent of consumers were individuals enrolled in 2014 plans and renewing coverage.

Last year, during the first month of Healthcare.gov, slightly more than 106,000 enrolled in health insurance. The figure was far lower than the 500,000 enrollments the Obama administration initially forecasted for the first month of the initial six-month enrollment period.
