21% of health plan members regularly use insurer's online portal

Only 21 percent of consumers receiving coverage through their employer use their health plan's member portal regularly, according to a recent HealthMine survey.

The 2017 HealthMine Health Intelligence Report: Communication and Digital Healthcare Tools comprises responses from 750 consumers enrolled in a sponsored insurance plan. The report aims to provide health plan sponsors insight into member attitudes about insurer communication.

Here are five survey findings.

1. Nearly three-fourths (73 percent) of respondents said their health plan does not understand their personal health very well.

2. Sixty percent of consumers want more communication from health insurance companies other than bills.

3. More than half (52 percent) of respondents with chronic conditions said their health plan communicates with them about their disease once a year.

4. Thirty-nine percent of consumers said their insurer does not provide a price transparency tool.

5. While 83 percent of respondents said they use digital health tools, just 22 percent said insurers use the data to offer guidance.
