Patient survives 6-story fall from Vermont hospital window

A patient is in critical condition after falling six stories from a window at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington May 15, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to Becker's May 19.

The individual reportedly opened and exited a window in a stairwell that is accessible to patients but mainly used by hospital staff, the spokesperson said.

Staff members stabilized the patient, who experienced multiple injuries, in the hospital's emergency room, and the patient continues to receive care at the hospital. The spokesperson declined to provide additional information about the patient, citing privacy rules.

"This was an extremely distressing situation for everyone involved," Stephen Leffler, MD, president and COO of UVM Medical Center, told Becker's. "I am grateful for the teams who provided life-saving care, and also want to thank the teams who continue to care for this patient."

The hospital said it is investigating the incident and immediately notified police after it occurred.
