The hospital’s parent company, Providence, R.I.-based Care New England, has also submitted an application with the state Department of Health to close Memorial Hospital’s emergency department.
The ICU closure and request to shutter the ED come before Memorial Hospital officially shuts its doors. The date of the hospital closure has yet to be determined.
On Oct. 16 Care New England’s board voted to close Memorial Hospital after the planned sale of the hospital to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Prime Healthcare Services, fell through.
Even when the hospital closes, Care New England intends “to continue providing certain community-based primary and specialty care services in Pawtucket,” according to NBC 10.
