Illinois hospital to close senior behavioral health unit

McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill., will close its senior behavioral health unit in June, the hospital's board of directors said May 21, according to NBC affiliate WGEM.

The board made the decision after evaluating MDH's finances and the number of patients at the unit. MDH President and CEO Brian Dietz said in a statement to WGEM that the hospital has lost nearly $700,000 in its current fiscal year due to the unit.

"The decision was based on the program's inability to meet projected volume and financial goals necessary to support a viable adult geropsychiatric service," Mr. Dietz said. "The quality metrics of the program were exceptional thanks to a very committed group of professionals, but the financial losses were far too great for the hospital to continue to underwrite."

Beginning June 1, the behavioral health unit will no longer accept new patients, and it will shutter by June 30.
