Hospital officials said Mayers Memorial was forced to shutter its newborn delivery department due to declining patient utilization and difficulty staffing the unit with trained obstetrics nurses.
Mayers recorded 108 deliveries in 2006 compared to 54 deliveries in 2015, or a 50 percent reduction.
“It’s been a constant conversation for the past five years,” hospital CEO Louis Ward told Record Searchlight. “We never wanted to see this day come.”
