4 hurt in Chicago air ambulance crash

A medical helicopter transporting a patient crashed July 7, injuring four people, one of whom is in critical condition, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The pilot made a mayday call before landing in a grassy median where the interstate splits. Three of the four on board already made it out of the helicopter when firefighters arrived.

"I think the pilot did an excellent job of landing a helicopter that was in an emergency situation," Fire Department Deputy District Chief Lynda Turner told the Tribune.

Two were taken to Oak Lawn, Ill.-based Advocate Christ Medical Center and two were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The original patient is in critical condition and the three crew members are in stable condition.

The air ambulance crashed around 9:15 p.m. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
