But although the patient may not realize it, the health system’s process to prepare for this patient started months before the patient ever stepped foot into the building. Six months earlier, the purchasing and contracting process ensured the appropriate and best catheter and equipment were bought and stocked in the right place to support patient volume, reimagined due to COVID supply chain challenges. Four months ago, an experienced nurse was hired and educated on internal systems, policies and procedures.

Two months ago, that same nurse was trained and certified on the appropriate use of topical  anesthetics for routine IV starts in the oncology day unit.Throughout that entire time, routine audit rounds identified any process or environment of care issues and corrective actions were taken. As part of the organization’s accreditation journey, staff were interviewed by surveyors to ensure they understood and could articulate policy and procedure during a routine Mock Survey. For this patient, at this facility, in this moment, the experience of starting an IV occurred safely and effectively because the facility had focused on ongoing quality and a positive patient experience, instead of solely just checking boxes in advance of a survey. This success was the result of hundreds of people working together in a complex ecosystem to anticipate and avoid failure. We know “survey ready” means continuous compliance.
