Vaughn Bryant, PhD, is receiving treatment for leukemia at Houston-based MD Anderson, but that has not stopped him from teaching classes and conducting research for College Station-based Texas A&M University, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Dr. Bryant, whose research is on pollen, continued to teach two online courses and conduct research while receiving treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. The treatment requires 30 days of isolation in a sterile room.

“I wanted to continue doing my research while I was locked up in a germ-free room for 30 days so I asked if I could have a microscope,” Dr. Bryant said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “The doctors said that never in the history of the leukemia ward had any patient ever asked for the use of a microscope and it took them a few days to decide whether or not to let me have one.”
