Patients With Implantable Devices Need Education About Imaging, Survey Shows

Older adults with electronic implantable devices may not have an adequate understanding of the relative risks and benefits to them of medical imaging, according to a survey of older adults conducted by the National Council on Aging.

According to the survey, more than 90 percent of physicians agreed that MRI is contraindicated and risky for patients with pacemakers or other electronic implantable devices. But three in 10 patients with electronic implantable devices have had an MRI despite the risks, the NCOA survey found, and of those, nearly 20 percent reported problems with the device afterwards.

Nearly one-third of patients and more than half of their caregivers said they did not remember being told when the device was implanted that they might not be eligible for some types of medical imaging, according to an NCOA release on the survey.
