A dose of feel-good to kick off the weekend.

Ray Noblitt retired from his job as an engineer in 2001. Since then, he’s made use of his time in a new way: volunteering.

“I never had time to do this when I was working, and I just think it’s a good think to do,” Mr. Noblitt said of his 13 years of volunteering at Decatur (Ala.) Morgan Hospital, according to WBRC.com.

Many other volunteers at the hospital are in the same boat as Mr. Noblitt.

“I’ve been doing this now for a year and a half, and I retired from the concrete business,” said Mr. Noblitt’s friend, Ralph Marshall. “It gives you a sense of joy to be able to help people, and then I meet so many co-workers, classmates that come through.”

Kathy White Goodwin, the hospital’s community relations coordinator, loves seeing retirees come in as volunteers.

“Our adult volunteers have been in the workforce and after they have retired, they are still wanting to do something,” she said. “Health-wise, most doctors will tell you that staying active after retirement is the best preventive medicine you can do.”
