Thousands play new game designed to educate people about liver disease

The Hospital of Providence in El Paso, Texas, the El Paso Times and the gamification software company OfferCraft collaborated to create an online game to educate people on liver disease prevention.

The game entails a digital quiz users progress through by answering a series of questions correctly. The game comes in both English and Spanish versions and features short embedded videos, links to podcasts and infographics on liver disease and prevention strategies. As of Thursday, the game had been played more than 3,000 times on mobile phones, computers and tablets.

The quiz is based on a series of investigative reporting from the El Paso Times published in 2016. The investigative series revealed more people die from liver disease in El Paso County than from lung cancer or breast cancer, and that the county's death rate from liver disease was nearly twice as high as the statewide average in 2013.

"This game has already reached thousands of people who otherwise might never have read our investigative report or watched our videos or listened to our podcast," said Bob Moore, editor of the El Paso Times. "We wanted to find a new way to draw in folks we don't traditionally reach and creating a game with appealing prizes was the best avenue there."
