UC San Diego Medical Center-UC San Diego Health. UC San Diego Health is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system. UC San Diego Health’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery is unique because it has its own basic science faculty. These scientists study clinical problems such as back pain, muscle injury, arthritis, disc degeneration and the effects of transfer, exercise, cerebral palsy, obesity and musculoskeletal conditions in a self-contained setting. The medical center was ranked No. 28 in the nation for orthopedic care by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17.
