Orthopedic surgeon appointed UAMS interim chancellor

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has appointed C. Lowry Barnes, MD, as interim chancellor of the university. 

Dr. Barnes joined UAMS as a professor and chair of the orthopedic surgery department at the university in 2014, according to a June 30 news release from the University of Arkansas System. 

Dr. Barnes is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint reconstruction and replacement surgery of the hip and knee. He is also a founding director of The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at UAMS. 

He will succeed Cam Patterson, MD, who served as chancellor and UAMS Health CEO for seven years. 

The national search to find the next permanent chancellor of UAMS is underway. 

The appointment is effective July 11, the release said.
