Hospital for Special Surgery reduced the number of opioids prescribed by 500,000 in 18 months after launching a Controlled Substances Task Force, the organization said in a press release.

Patients who receive nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, along with opioids after surgery may use fewer opioids than patients who only receive opioids, according to new research.

The $19 million Ascension St. Vincent Orthopedic Hospital opened through a partnership between St. Vincent Evansville (Ind.) and Evansville-based Tri-State Orthopaedic Surgeons, according to the Courier & Press, part of the USA Today network.
