Five things to know:
1. Hoag has been using virtual reality headsets developed by Surgical Theater, a VR medical imaging company, since 2015.
2. The technology enables surgeons to visualize human anatomy in detail preoperatively.
3. Two of Hoag’s operating rooms are equipped with Surgical Theater technology, which the hospital’s surgeons have used in more than 1,000 cases.
4. Neurosurgeon Robert Louis, MD, is among those using the system to rehearse complex brain and spine surgery.
5. Surgical Theater’s technology received FDA clearance in 2013. It creates 3D models of the brain using existing MRI scans.
