Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston). Dr. Harvey Cushing founded the neurosurgery department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1913 and the department has grown to include 22 clinical neurosurgeons, 17 Boston-based Harvard Medical School residents and 150-plus staff members. The neurosurgery department’s research team encompasses 100 members in 15 laboratories, and the department receives about $10 million in research funding annually. With such success, Brigham and Women’s was able to grow its neurosurgical care, unveiling the Building for Transformative Medicine and the Neurosciences Center dedicated to neuroscience, orthopedics, immunology, arthritis and allergy research in October 2016. U.S. News & World Report ranked Brigham and Women’s as No. 19 in the nation for adult neurology and neurosurgery in 2017-18.
