NP tells jury Insys gave her $82K in kickbacks for overprescribing opioids

Connecticut-based nurse practitioner Heather Alfonso on Feb. 11 testified that Insys Therapeutics gave her thousands of dollars in kickbacks for prescribing the company's highly addictive opioid painkiller Subsys, reports Bloomberg.

Ms. Alfonso testified before a federal jury in Boston as part of a racketeering case against Insys founder John Kapoor and other executives who allegedly bribed physicians to write Subsys prescriptions by giving them fake speaker's fees.

She said Insys paid her more than $82,000 in kickbacks between 2013-15 while she was working as an NP at the Comprehensive Pain and Headache Treatment Center in Derby, Conn.

"If I was going to choose between one drug or another, I would choose the Subsys because that's what I was getting paid for," Ms. Alfonso testified.

She gave up her nursing license in March 2015 after the Drug Enforcement Administration accused her of overprescribing narcotics.
