University of Rochester (N.Y.) Wilmot Cancer Institute has become the 73rd cancer center in the U.S. to earn National Cancer Institute designation.

Wilmot is one of the largest cancer centers in New York state outside of New York City. It treats more than 45,000 patients across 27 counties in Western and Central New York, according to a March 19 news release from the university.

The designation is a result of an effort that began in 2013 when Jonathan Friedberg, MD, joined the Wilmot Cancer Institute as director. He expanded the center’s research infrastructure and regional footprint, the release said.

“We are committed to leverage this designation toward continued growth, increased clinical trial availability for our patients, and ultimately, decreased suffering from cancer throughout our region,” Dr. Friedberg said in the release.
