This trend is due in part to the Institute of Medicine’s 2005 report “From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition,” which emphasized the paucity of programs for cancer survivors, according to the report. In addition, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons made survivorship programs a requirement for cancer center certification in 2015.
Some of the facilities that offer cancer survivorship programs include Jonsson Comprehensive Medical Center at UCLA, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Stanford (Calif.) Cancer Institute, according to the report.
