‘Gene therapy pioneer’: City of Hope leader John Zaia dies

John Zaia, MD, director of the Center for Gene Therapy at Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope, died Feb. 11 at age 82.

Dr. Zaia also served as the Aaron D. Miller and Edith Miller Chair for Gene Therapy and founding director emeritus of the City of Hope Alpha Stem Cell Clinic, according to a Feb. 13 news release from City of Hope. 

He spent 44 years at City of Hope and “earned renown as a premier virologist and gene therapy pioneer,” the release said. “He is recognized worldwide for his breakthrough efforts to eradicate HIV as well as for his work in pediatric diseases.”

“His contributions to the worlds of science and medicine are nothing short of extraordinary and will undoubtedly have a lasting impact,” his family said in the release. “His legacy, along with his love for life and all those around him, will continue to inspire us all for our lifetimes.”

Dr. Zaia died of pancreatic cancer.
