The issue, titled “Special Series: Financial Toxicity in Oncology Practice,” was published Jan. 10 on the ASCO Publications’ website.
The term “financial toxicity” is used to encompass the financial challenges faced by patients and their families during cancer treatment.
Here are three things to know about the special issue:
- Fumiko Chino, MD, from Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Ryan Nipp, MD, from Oklahoma City-based OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center answer “Where Are We and How Did We Get Here?” in an introduction to the issue.
- Research in the issue includes the effect and utility of adding a financial toxicity screening tool into clinical workflows, as well as analysis of the financial hardship among cancer survivors and its association with health status, social functioning and mental health.
- Editorials on how to measure financial toxicity, the positive effects of financial assistance programs, patient and provider perspectives on financial toxicity, how payers contribute to the problem, and a proposed model to address the unique needs of patients with cancer and their families.
