New Rules Treat Mental Illnesses Like Physical Illnesses

The Obama administration has released long-awaited rules on mental health parity, ensuring mental health insurance claims will be covered almost identically to physical health claims, according to a report from NPR.

The law, passed in 2008, previously only applied to employees in large group health plans. With the 2010 passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, mental health parity was expanded to smaller groups and individual plans.

The new rules define parity for insurance companies and ensure almost all insurance providers offer the same amount of coverage for mental health claims as for coverage of physical health, according to the report.
