Shands Jacksonville Moves Forward With Medical Complex Construction Despite Opposition

Shands Jacksonville (Fla.) is moving ahead with construction of a new medical complex, including a 100-bed hospital and an outpatient facility, despite opposition from Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, according to a Florida Times-Union report.

Memorial Hospital, part of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America, has filed an appeal of Shands Jacksonville's provisional certificate of need, claiming the community has no need for a third hospital — St. Vincent's HealthCare and HCA have also been approved to build new hospitals in the area.

UF&Shands Health System countered that a new hospital is needed and the two other hospitals are far from Shands' proposed site.

Shands will construct the new outpatient building, which does not require state approval, over the next 18 months, according to the report.
