Obama Announces April 15 Cutoff for PPACA Enrollment Extension

Those who started signing up for coverage before the open enrollment deadline Monday but were unable to complete the process have until April 15 to finish signing up, the Obama administration has announced, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

That deadline applies to people who were unable to enroll in time because of long waits at enrollment centers, on phone hotlines or because of limited site capacity and technical problems on HealthCare.gov,, according to the report. Federal officials have indicated people who encounter more serious technical problems, such as system errors while trying to prove immigration status or applications getting lost in transfer to health plans, will have at least 60 days from the occurrence of the problem to sign up, according to the report.

The Obama administration initially announced last week that the 2104 open enrollment period for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act health insurance exchanges would be extended in certain cases. As of Monday's deadline, more than 7 million people had signed up for health insurance coverage through the exchanges, exceeding the most recent Congressional Budget Office projection of 6 million.
