House Speaker 'Not Wedded' to Medicare Overhaul

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is "not wedded" to a GOP plan to overhaul Medicare, which faces strong public opposition in the polls, according to a report by ABC News.

The plan, passed by the House on April 15, was authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), chairman of the House budget committee, as part of the 2012 GOP budget plan.

In an interview with ABC News, Mr. Boehner said of the plan, "I’m for it. It’s our idea. It’s Paul [Ryan]’s idea. Now other people have other ideas. I’m not wedded to one single idea."

Under the GOP plan, Medicare would switch to a voucher system for people currently under age 55 at the time they enter the program.

Due to the proposal's unpopularity, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may change his mind and hold a vote on it, forcing moderate Republicans to take a position going into the 2012 elections.
