Forsyth Women's Health Center Changes Name to Honor Maya Angelou

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Forsyth Medical Center will rename its women's center to honor author and civil rights activist and Winston-Salem-based Wake Forest University professor Maya Angelou, according to a Winston-Salem Journal report.

Forsyth Medical Center chose to rename its women's health center after Dr. Angelou, an honorary PhD more than thirty times over, because she "transcends generations" and "produces work that resonates with women around the world."

The name change is part of an overall revamping of the women's health center, bringing together all parts of Forsyth that affect women's health.

"This is a rethinking of how we deliver women's health and wellness services from our women's health nurse navigators who guide the care of our patients, to advance the support of our physicians, nurses and staff to provide care customized to every woman to optimize her health and sense of well-being," said Chere Gregory, MD, director of neurosciences at Forsyth Medical Center and a member of the team that created the new vision for the center.

This is not the first health center named in Dr. Angelou's honor. The Maya Angelou Center for Women's Health and Wellness at Forsyth will add to a running list of more than 30 healthcare or medical facilities named after the iconic woman.

Dr. Angelou has received more than two dozen honorary degrees and is the Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University.
