Fill Hospital Surgery Department Leadership Gaps: An Opportunity to Improve

Hospitals are at risk when a key surgery department director or manager leaves, but companies such as Surgical Directions can help bridge the gap with permanent and interim directors.

While many firms provide generalist leaders, hospital surgery departments require specialists to really understand the service's specific needs. "We work with many hospitals that see a leadership transition as a priceless opportunity to transform the service," said Alecia Torrance, RN, BS, MBA, CNOR, Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations at Surgical Directions, in a company news release. "Our interim directors and managers are able to bring a fresh perspective and make the tough decisions that enable the OR to improve dramatically."

At one medical center, the company helped increase on-time starts from around 75 percent to 95 percent and reduced room turnover time by 30 minutes.
