Contaminated Skin Antiseptics Could Cause Death

A new report called "Why Sterility Matters," by the Clorox Company, notes that all skin antiseptics are not completely sterile, and a number of clinical infections associated with a variety of approved products have been reported to the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While many skin antiseptics have sterile outer packaging, the antiseptic inside the package is not sterilized. The use of contaminated skin antiseptics has even led to systemic infections resulting in death.

Aplicare, from Clorox Healthcare, is the only manufacturer of skin antiseptics that terminally sterilizes its foil-packed unit-of-use products using a proprietary process, according to the company.
