AHA Pours $968K Into GOP Ads

The American Hospital Association's political action committee reported spending $968,000 on advertisements in support of Republican incumbent representatives in four states who have voted to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a report from The Center for Public Integrity.

The ads back Reps. Charles Boustany Jr., MD (Louisiana), Richard Hanna (N.Y.), Tom Reed (N.Y.), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.) and Jim Gerlach (Pa.). Each representative sits on a healthcare committee.

The spending comes from the AHA's regulated PAC, which can accept a maximum of $5,000 in contributions but is allowed to make direct donations to candidates — unlike a super PAC.

This is the AHA PAC's first reported independent expenditure in the election. The association has previously said that both President Barack Obama's healthcare law and Republic Rep. Paul Ryan's plans for Medicare involve cuts it does not support, but it still considers PPACA as a more looming threat, according to the report.
