10 Things to Know About VMG Health

VMG Health is a healthcare valuation and transaction advisory firm, serving acute-care hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, cancer centers and numerous other providers.

Here are 10 things to know about VMG Health.

1. VMG Health, also known as Value Management Group, was founded in May 1995. Greg Koonsman co-founded the firm, which was one of the first healthcare-focused valuation and financial advisory services firms in the country. Since then, VMG has conducted more than 9,000 projects for healthcare clients. It has two offices: one in Dallas and another in Nashville, Tenn.

2. Before co-founding VMG Health, Mr. Koonsman worked with Ernst & Young's healthcare financial advisory group, and he also co-founded Practice Performance, a physician management organization that was ultimately sold to MedSynergies in 2006.

3. VMG's services are defined by eight primary areas: business valuations, professional services valuations, life sciences thought leader compensation, capital asset valuations, financial reporting valuations, real estate valuations, transaction advisory services and joint venture developments.

4. VMG performs more than 1,500 healthcare valuations every year in the United States and abroad. Core valuation services include fair market value opinions, fairness opinions, valuation consulting and feasibility/financial assessments.

5. Clients within VMG's portfolio include some of the largest hospitals, health systems and surgery centers in the country: Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, Tenn.; Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tenn.; Advocate Health Care in Downers Grove, Ill.; Tenet Healthcare Corp. in Dallas; Providence Health & Services in Renton, Wash.; Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston; Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas; LifePoint Hospitals in Brentwood, Tenn.; Prime Healthcare Services in Ontario, Calif.; Scottsdale (Ariz.) 6. In the past three years, VMG has valuated more than 200 hospitals and health systems that underwent or considered transactions.

7. VMG publishes two of the most comprehensive benchmarking and statistical surveys in the ASC industry: the ValueDriver ASC Survey and the Intellimarker ASC Benchmarking Study.

8. The Intellimarker study from 2010 analyzed revenue, liquidity, payer mix, specialty mix, case volume and numerous other statistics from more than 170 freestanding ASCs and 1 million cases, making it one of the only ASC studies of its kind.

9. Four VMG staffers — Mr. Koonsman, Jen Johnson, Kevin McDonough and Colin Park — were named to the Becker's ASC Review list "235 People in the ASC Industry to Know" in 2013.

10. In 2012, the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business named VMG to the Dallas 100 Awards, which highlight the 100 fastest-growing privately held companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
