Werner Boel, a principal at executive search firm at Witt/Kieffer, said many of his healthcare clients seek out executives with a legal background or training to help avoid compliance issues that may befall executives who are less savvy about healthcare regulations, according to the article.
Anne Murphy, a member of the former general counsel at the Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center, recommended healthcare organizations involve their in-house legal teams early in the decision-making process. If organizations don’t have their own legal teams, they should aim to handle their own legal work instead of relying on outside counsel for advice.
“Having a general counsel that is at the table and providing meaningful input as strategic decisions are being made can be invaluable,” said Ms. Murphy. “This is particularly true given the ever higher stakes for health-care providers when it comes to fraud and abuse or possible Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute violations.”
