The settlement comes after Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority self-reported that from 2009 through September 2014, it overbilled Medicare, Tricare, and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan for radiation oncology services. The DOJ said the health system authority discovered the billing errors through audits and claims data, took corrective action to address radiation oncology billing practices and disclosed to the government.
The settlement resolves the civil claims, and civil liability has not been determined.
Hospital officials told Becker’s VCU Health System’s audits and claims data also indicated about $640,000 in inaccurate payments that will be paid to Virginia.
