Tech, pharma companies prepare for congressional scrutiny

Washington, D.C.-based law firms are readying corporate clients for congressional investigations if Democrats take back the majority in the House of Representatives after the midterm election, according to a report from Politico.

Law firms have been tracking Democrats’ criticism of corporations and issuing memos to clients listing the inquiries they may face and the lawmakers who are likely to be leading the charge. Some firms are even soliciting new clients with warnings of investigations, according to the report.

Lawyers told Politico pharmaceutical companies and tech companies “are obvious targets,” in addition to oil and gas corporations. Specific targets named in the report include private intelligence agency Black Cube, Amgen, Abbvie, Eli Lilly, Merck and Pfizer. Tech companies responsible for spreading misinformation and firms seeking to influence the Department of Veterans Affairs could also be at risk, according to the report.

Other sources said companies face risk of congressional investigation no matter which party takes the House in November, especially as President Donald Trump continues to be a vocal critic of pharma and tech.
