Surgeon wins $3.2M verdict after falling in hospital OR

A jury has awarded John Alonge, DDS, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a $3.2 million verdict after he slipped and fell in an operating room at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, Pa., the Erie Times-News reported Sept. 18.

According to court documents, Dr. Alonge slipped and fell on the OR's newly mopped floor in July 2020 and injured his shoulder and back. He filed a personal injury suit that claimed the hospital was negligent.

In the lawsuit, Dr. Alonge alleged that he was forced to retire three years earlier than he had planned because of the injuries to his back and shoulder, according to the report.

The jury found the hospital solely negligent, awarding the surgeon $3.2 million for past and future economic and noneconomic losses.

Saint Vincent Hospital did not respond to Becker's request for comment.
