Stolen physician notebook may have exposed information of 2,770 Prisma Health patients

Richland County, S.C.-based Prisma Health mailed letters to 2,770 patients about a security incident that may have exposed their personal health information.

The health system discovered July 9 that a notebook was stolen from a physician's car. The notebook contained patients' names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and limited clinical information. No Social Security numbers or financial information was in the stolen notebook.

Prisma Health determined that the information in the notebook was limited to emergency department and obstetrics and gynecology patients at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, S.C.

There is not evidence that patient information has been misused. Prisma Health is recommending patients monitor their account statements and report any discrepancies.
