Lexington and Columbia-based Providence have filed a joint request with state regulators for the change, which could be opposed by Palmetto Health, also in Columbia, the holder of the other open-heart CON license in the area.
Currently, Lexington can diagnose heart patients and perform emergency angioplasties but must transfer them to the other two organizations if they need more critical care.
Lexington had opposed Providence’s plans to build a new 32-bed tower at its 46-bed Northeast campus.
