South Carolina Hospital Seeks to Pay Rival $15M for its Open-Heart CON

Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., proposed to pay its rival Providence Hospitals $15 million to acquire one of Providence’s four CON licenses for open-heart surgery and to drop its opposition to a proposed Providence expansion, according to a report by the State.

Lexington and Columbia-based Providence have filed a joint request with state regulators for the change, which could be opposed by Palmetto Health, also in Columbia, the holder of the other open-heart CON license in the area.

Currently, Lexington can diagnose heart patients and perform emergency angioplasties but must transfer them to the other two organizations if they need more critical care.

Lexington had opposed Providence’s plans to build a new 32-bed tower at its 46-bed Northeast campus.
