Senior Healthcare Associates to pay $930k to settle false claims allegations

Hermitage, Pa.-based Senior Healthcare Associates agreed to a $930,000 settlement to resolve allegations the organization violated the False Claims Act, according to the Department of Justice.

According to court documents, John Balko, MD, of SHA allegedly submitted false claims to the Medicare program that were medically unnecessary, unauthorized, not requested by patients and were unsupported by patient medical records.. The claims consisted of services provided to nursing home residents, including earwax removal, podiatry and certain evaluation and management services.

Office of the Inspector General conducted the investigation.
