The two hospitals’ actions oppose the State of Georgia’s certificate of need approval for Gwinnett to start a $33 million open-heart program, which would be the first such facility in Gwinnett County outside of Atlanta, the medical center stated.
The Gwinnett heart program won the CON approval in 2008 and that decision was upheld in earlier this year, but opponents are still appealing, arguing that residents of the county have easy access to Atlanta heart surgery programs.
