Review Finds State Medical Board Needs Duties Outlined by Legislators

An investigation of the Maryland Board of Physicians found that the professional body should have its duties and powers outlined by the state General Assembly and recommended it be split into two panels — one for investigations and one for discipline, according to a Baltimore Sun report.

The review, which was performed by Jay Perman, MD, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, included 18 separate recommendations and came eight months after a legislative report that found the Board was slow to issue disciplinary actions against healthcare providers in the state.

Maryland’s Secretary of Health Joshua Sharfstein, MD, supported the recommendation, saying splitting the board into two panels would “[eliminate] bottlenecks and [add] layered review at the same time,” according to the report.
