The Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, which represents pharmacy benefit managers, has filed a lawsuit challenging Arkansas Act 624, a recently passed state law the group says threatens patient access to medications and pharmacy services.

The group’s lawsuit argues that the law could force the closure of around 40 pharmacies in Arkansas, including specialty and mail-order pharmacies, according to a June 9 news release.

The lawsuit also alleges the law would reduce competition in the prescription drug market by discriminating against certain pharmacy types, which could lead to higher costs for patients, employers and insurers.
