The patient, 48-year-old Donald Keith Smith, was admitted to Greenville Memorial with a gunshot wound to the arm. Police told WYFF Mr. Smith became combative while in the hospital’s emergency department, hitting a hospital security guard. After a struggle with security personnel, Mr. Smith stopped breathing, according to the report.
Hospital staff tried to resuscitate Mr. Smith but failed. Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at 10:23 a.m., according to the Greenville News.
The incident is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Greenville Health System spokesperson Karen Potter told Becker’s the system is cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.
