One person died and two people were injured after a vehicle struck a building and a gas line on the campus of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston on Oct. 1, according to the Boston Police Department and NBC affiliate Boston10.
Officers were called at 10:48 a.m. and found that the vehicle had hit a building and gas line near the hospital’s parking garage, a police spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s. One person was struck by the vehicle and pronounced dead, while the two people inside the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Homicide detectives and the department’s fatal collision team responded to the scene, along with National Grid, the natural gas utility in Boston, and the city’s Inspectional Services Department.
“Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is deeply saddened by this tragic incident. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the individual who died and to those who were injured. Our thoughts are also with all who witnessed today’s events. We are grateful to our partners in the Boston Police and Fire Departments and Boston EMS, as well as National Grid, for working closely with our teams to respond quickly, contain the situation, and help ensure the safety of our patients, staff, and community,” a hospital spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s.
The main hospital remains open and operational. According to the hospital, Belkin House, a standalone building on the hospital campus, will be closed Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Thirty-two people, including ambulatory patients and staff, were safely evacuated.
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is a 171-bed nonprofit hospital and part of Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham.
