The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a 58-year-old patient displaying suicidal ideation went to VA Atlanta Health Care in Decatur on Jan. 29. Around 10 p.m., the patient pulled out a knife and threatened to harm himself. Hospital police responded and told the patient to put the knife down. The patient refused and “eventually advanced towards a staff member while holding the knife,” the GBI said.

An officer shot the patient. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical staff, WSB-TV reported.

“A fatal shooting occurred on campus Monday night that is currently under investigation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted. Due to the ongoing investigation, we must refer all questions to GBI,” a spokesperson for the Atlanta VA Medical Center told  Becker’s.
