Payam Toobian, MD, who ran a diagnostic radiology center in New York City, is accused of bribing other physicians for patient referrals, then subjecting some of those patients to unnecessary tests and submitting false claims to Medicaid, according to a Aug. 1 news release from the New York attorney general’s office.
Dr. Toobian allegedly handed out $547,000 in gift cards, cash and checks to three physicians between January 2006 and August 2017 in exchange for patient referrals to his imaging company, according to the release. Dr. Toobian’s company allegedly received more than $1 million in paid claims from Medicaid relating to the patient referrals.
