New York physician gets 30 months in prison for Medicare fraud

New York gastroenterologist Morris Barnard, MD, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for healthcare fraud, the Justice Department said Jan. 5.

From October 2015 through February 2020, Dr. Barnard, who practices in Great Neck, billed Medicare for more than $3 million for colonoscopies and other procedures that were not performed, the Justice Department said. Most of the submissions indicated the procedures were for disabled beneficiaries living in residential group homes.

Dr. Barnard pleaded guilty in March 2022, the Justice Department said. In addition to the prison time, he was ordered to pay more than $1.4 million in restitution.
