The Pittsburgh health insurance giant had private meetings with physicians from community-based healthcare systems in a county east of Allegheny County, where the city of Pittsburgh is located, to discuss affiliations and acquisition opportunities even before the West Penn Allegheny Health System deal is approved, according to the Tribune-Review. The push to recruit medical professionals in counties outside of Allegheny illustrates recent and growing tension between Highmark and UPMC.
Highmark acquired West Penn Allegheny Health System last year and awaits state approval of the acquisition before moving forward. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department will hold a public hearing April 17 on Highmark.
