New Jersey Assembly Advances Caregiver Bill for Discharged Patients

The New Jersey Assembly has approved Assembly Bill 2955, which would allow patients admitted to New Jersey hospitals to designate a caregiver who will provide assistance upon discharge, according to a Jersey Tribune report.

Under the legislation, the designated caregiver's information — including their name, address and telephone number — would be entered into the patient's medical record. Additionally, within 24 hours of the patient being discharged, the hospital would provide the caregiver with detailed instructions on how to care for the patient, and the caregiver would be given an opportunity to ask questions, according to the report.

"This measure will enhance patient care by enabling caregivers to provide better support to their loved ones at home and avoid costly hospital readmissions," said Assemblywoman Nancy Muñoz (R-Union), one of the bill's sponsors, in the report.

The bill was passed with a 73-0 vote, and the legislation will now move to the Senate.
