New Illinois Law Will Reduce Charges for Uninsured Patients

A new law in Illinois will reduce what hospitals can charge uninsured patients and cap the amount of money they can collect in payment, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

According to the report, hospitals cannot charge more than the cost of services plus 35 percent for eligible uninsured patients. In addition, hospitals cannot collect more than 25 percent of a patient’s family’s annual income from these patients.

The new law goes into effect Apr. 1.
